Diamond Rings - All Yr Songs

Heard this song the other day on turntable.fm*.  Total guilty pleasure.  To me this song sounds like it came out in 1998 (and it sounds like something I would have been listening to in 1998).  If you’re feeling brave you can YouTube the strange and entertaining music video.

*I’ve tried to remember the last time I was as excited about a web site as I am about turntable.fm.  It’s a ton of fun, and for a pseudo music snob like me, it fulfills this intense narcissistic need to have other people appreciate my taste in music.  Everyone should try it.  The idea is very simple.  There are rooms themed around different types of music (or anything else for that matter).  In each room there are five DJ slots in a lineup on a little stage.  Below the stage there is space for the avatars of the people listening.  Any time a DJ leaves and a new spot opens up, anyone in the room can hop up on stage.  The app rotates through each DJ spot and plays the next song in that DJ’s queue.  During each song everyone can click the “Lame” or “Awesome” buttons.  If you click Awesome, then your avatar starts bobbing his head and the DJ gets a point.  With points you can unlock new avatars!  With new avatars you feel even cooler!  It’s crazy awesome.  I highly encourage everyone to try it, but for now it’s only if you have a Facebook friend (like me) who is also using it (oh exclusivity…).

Foreign Hands - Waves

Six minutes long and basically two songs in one.  The first song is jangly, catchy pop-rock and the second one is an aggressive guitar orgy.  Really excited about this band.  You can hear two other songs on their SoundCloud page that are also very good.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong

The Pains played Letterman yesterday and Keith and I were lucky enough to attend the taping.  It was pretty awesome seeing a bunch of obviously-nice people have something so awesome and enormous happen to them.  They were by turns nervous and enthusiastic and their faces said it all at the end of the performance when Dave walked up.

They played this track.  Video of the performance on YouTube.

Brother/Sister - Opossum

Somehow sounds like Beach House mixed with She & Him.  I think it will be difficult for fans of either or both to pass this one up.  Kinda obsessed.  Another one I learned about from Fred Wilson DOT VC.

Best Coast - When I’m With You

Kind of an annoying song, right?  That’s what I thought for like six months.  But something happened.  I don’t know what.  I played it again recently and now I’m hooked.  In actuality (and unfortunately for me), nobody else ever thought it was annoying and everyone loves it and everyone was hooked…six months ago.  Think I gotta credit this guy for tipping the scales for me.

Run Toto Run - Sleepyhead (Passion Pit Cover)

Every new sound that slips into this song takes it to yet another higher level.  Of course the original is a great place to start, but this mellow, lo-fi version is a lot of fun.

Belle & Sebastian - I Want the World to Stop

This track reminds me (and probably everyone else) of “(Don’t Fear)* the Reaper”.  The whole thing feels like it’s forty years old but in a good way.  I’m still a B&S rookie but this new album is slowly motivating me to check out some of their older stuff.

*Why parentheses there?  Just to show everyone that I double-checked Wikipedia for the exact song title??  Ugh.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Heart in your Heartbreak

I am like a teenage girl in love for the first time.  And the object of my affection is this song.  Friends are turning away from me.  Family is worried about me.  I am obsessed.  The only thing that can fix me is…listening to it again.

Slow Club - When I Go

Kinda like the Moldy Peaches (or at least what I guess the Moldy Peaches sound like based on that song from Juno) but way better.

Los Campesinos! - You! Me! Dancing!

They have a million great songs, a ton of newer songs, probably some better songs…but there’s a reason this is the one that’s in a Budweiser commercial.  I’m pretty sure they’ve played it at every show since 2007, and much dancing ensues.  Ultimate crowd favorite.

Beats yeah, they were comin out your speakers…
